About PRP

Hair loss is a major concern for many women and men, whether it is caused by age, genetics, hormones, medical conditions, or from styling products or practices. With recent advances in research in the hair restoration field, new treatments have been created to help combat the issue. Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is an innovative nonsurgical remedy that has shown remarkable benefits in slowing down, stopping, and reversing hair loss. PRP has shown promising outcomes in patients with alopecia areata and thinning eyebrows. Jennifer Dharamsi, M.D. of Legacy Dermatology & Restoration Center is one of only a small handful of hair restoration practitioners who offer this innovative therapy in Frisco, TX. By mixing a powerful solution of growth factors and bioactive proteins, Dr. Dharamsi and her seasoned team of providers can help stimulate the production of your hair, leading to longer, thicker, healthier locks.

Ideal Candidates

Any man or woman suffering from hair loss is essentially an ideal candidate for PRP therapy, but those with early hair loss usually attain the best results. PRP is great for patients with androgenic alopecia, which is a genetically determined type of hair thinning that usually occurs along the top of the head. In women, this may look like a widening part with average hair thickness at the back of the head. Patients with sections of weak hair growth on the scalp with functioning hair follicles typically have the best results with PRP hair regrowth treatments.

Procedure Technique

A minimally invasive procedure, PRP therapy is a short 60-minute in-office visit. The procedure begins with attaining a small amount of your blood and placing it in a special machine, which rotates the blood at a high speed to separate the platelets from the remaining portion of the blood components. Next, a local anesthetic is administered to your scalp and the concentrated platelet-rich plasma is reintroduced into regions of your scalp that are thinning or bald. Finally, microneedling is performed on the scalp to create micro-channels in the skin, which activates the PRP and permits it to penetrate deep into the dermis. Our protocol for nonsurgical management of hair loss contains an initial treatment and maintenance sessions roughly every nine months to one year.

What to Expect

There's no downtime following this procedure with almost no limitations or restrictions. If anything, patients may develop some redness, minimal swelling, and mild tenderness to the treated areas. These symptoms can last up to 48 hours. While results differ for each patient, cosmetic outcomes are generally seen around 4 – 6 months after the first treatment and can continue to improve up to a full year following treatment. As PRP is not a permanent solution for hair loss, repeat treatments are suggested every 12 – 18 months. It is very important to be aware that PRP does not grow new hair follicles in locations where you are already bald. It is used to reverse the miniaturization of hair follicles so they will produce healthier, thicker, longer hair fibers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does PRP therapy for hair cost?
PRP therapy for hair rejuvenation will vary in cost based on the severity of your condition and how many treatments are needed to attain your goals. Dr. Dharamsi and our team will develop a treatment plan and estimate your costs during your initial consultation.

How often should I get PRP treatments?
The frequency of your treatments will depend on your unique condition and the number of sessions recommended to achieve your desired cosmetic. Typically, we recommend you undergo at least three treatments spaced one month apart to see how your body responds, and then we will determine when you should return for additional sessions if needed.

How effective is PRP therapy at treating hair loss?
The results of your PRP therapy will depend on the severity of your hair loss, how many treatments you receive, and how well your body responds to the treatment. It's important to have realistic expectations, as it takes time for new hair growth to become visible after a PRP session. During your consultation, we will help answer all your questions so you can know what to expect.
